Sen. Robert Menendez Joins JDCA for Briefing on Thursday

July 31, 2018

Two months ago, President Trump recklessly withdrew the United States from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA, or Iran nuclear deal) with nothing to replace it. While not a perfect agreement, the JCPOA provided for verifiable measures to eliminate Iran’s nuclear weapons program. Perhaps most importantly, it provided for an international inspections regime, through which the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) confirmed numerous times that Iran was complying with the terms of the deal. Two months later, the Trump administration has made no progress in attempts to improve and renegotiate the JCPOA, and President Trump has threatened military action against Iran on Twitter. As we consider next steps, including the reimposition of U.S. sanctions, few can predict how this critically important national security issue will unfold.

On Thursday, August 2 at 2:30 p.m. EST, Sen. Robert Menendez (D-NJ) will join the Jewish Democratic Council of America (JDCA) for the latest call in our speaker series and bring some clarity to these looming questions, including what measures Congress is considering related to Iran. Sen. Menendez, who is now running for his third term representing New Jersey in the Senate, serves as the leading Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and speaks with authority on all foreign policy matters including Iran and Israel. To join the call, please sign up here.

We will also be joined on the call by Ned Price, Director of Policy and Communications at National Security Action. Ned served as Special Assistant to President Obama for National Security Affairs and as National Security Council spokesperson. He previously served as a senior analyst at the CIA, and is currently a NBC news Analyst and Contributor. Ned will speak about the current dynamic between the White House and the intelligence community and what it means for U.S. national security on matters such as Russia, Iran, North Korea and others. You can read Ned’s full bio here, as well as a powerful op-ed he wrote for the Washington Post about why he could no longer serve as a civil servant in the Trump administration titled “I Didn’t Ever Think I’d Leave the CIA; Because of Trump, I Quit.”

To join the call, sign-up here, and please feel free to forward the email to friends. Please send questions for Sen. Menendez and Ned to [email protected] in advance of the call. The call will be off-the-record.
