Jewish Dems Speak Out Against Trump’s Withdrawal of U.S. Troops from Syria

December 21, 2018

Washington, DC– Today, the Chairman of the Jewish Democratic Council of America (JDCA) Ron Klein issued the following statement regarding President Trump’s surprise decision to withdraw U.S. troops from Syria:

“The Jewish Democratic Council of America (JDCA) is deeply concerned about President Trump’s dangerous, incoherent foreign policy, which manifested itself yesterday in his abrupt decision to withdraw all U.S. troops from Syria. This reckless decision, which by all evidence was made against the advice of U.S. military and intelligence experts and the Secretary of Defense, not only put U.S. national security interests at risk, but also jeopardizes the security interests of our allies including Israel.

“In Syria, Iran will now have its long-sought corridor to the Mediterranean, including a land-bridge that will effectively bring Iran to Israel’s border. The withdrawal of U.S. troops only increases the likelihood of Israeli clashes with Iran near the Syrian border and directly threatens Israel’s security. Moreover, it benefits other adversaries, including Russia, which has long-sought dominance in Syria. JDCA calls on its members to speak out against this reckless, irresponsible betrayal of our allies and the dangers it poses to U.S. security interests in the region.

“As Secretary of Defense Mattis said in his resignation letter, ‘we cannot protect our interests or serve that role effectively without maintaining strong alliances and showing respect to those allies.’” We agree. President Trump’s America First policy has put America last, and the entire nation should be alarmed that Secretary Mattis felt it necessary to resign because of the president’s reckless views.

“This might be a great day for Iran, Turkey, and Russia, but it is a dangerous day for America. It is now up to the American people to speak up for a coherent foreign policy grounded in American values and respect for our allies, including Israel.”
