Jewish Dems Mobilizing to Protect Abortion Access
WASHINGTON – In response to the leaked draft decision from the US Supreme Court that would dismantle the right to abortion enshrined in Roe v. Wade, Jewish Democratic Council of America CEO Halie Soifer released the following statement:
“We are outraged to learn that a Supreme Court with three Trump-appointed justices plans to dismantle 50 years of settled law, stripping Americans of their right to access safe abortions. This decision directly violates the will of the people, judicial precedent, and the fundamental rights of Americans. It also defies the values and moral convictions held by the vast majority of Jewish Americans, 75% of whom are concerned about the possibility of overturning Roe v. Wade.
“We are incredibly grateful for a President who shares our views, but Congress must now act. Despite ongoing Republican obstruction, Democrats have the majority in the House and Senate, and it’s incumbent on them to use that majority to send legislation to President Biden’s desk. It’s past time for the Senate to end the arcane filibuster and pass the Women’s Health Protection Act, which will immediately codify Roe into law and ensure its protections for future generations.
“This critically important decision will likely fall to voters in November, and JDCA will do all we can to defeat anti-abortion Republicans and elect more pro-choice Democrats to Congress. In the meantime, we will be mobilizing voters and amplifying our voices, including during JDCA’s second annual Week of Action on May 11 and 12, when we will take to the Hill to demand action that nullifies this unconscionable – and not yet final – SCOTUS decision.”
