JDCA Responds to Iranian Breach of JCPOA
WASHINGTON – The Jewish Democratic Council of America (JDCA) today responded to Iran’s violation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), or Iran nuclear deal. JDCA Executive Director Halie Soifer said the following:
“Today’s announcement that Iran has breached the JCPOA is deeply concerning, and the clearest demonstration that President Trump’s reckless withdrawal from the agreement has made America and our allies, including Israel, less safe. Each escalatory step – whether initiated by Iran or the Trump administration – is pushing us further from reaching a diplomatic agreement to current tensions and closer to military conflict.
“We are under no illusions about the Iranian threat, which is why it is critically important to ensure Iran does not obtain a nuclear weapon. While not a perfect agreement, the JCPOA met this objective, and Iran has complied with the terms of the agreement until now.
“We are deeply concerned that President Trump has no strategy for confronting Iran other than threatening military action, for which he does not have the legal authority to carry out according to a majority in Congress. The Trump administration must commit to resolving this conflict diplomatically, and we encourage the president to respond to Iran’s latest escalation with a coherent and principled strategy to ensure Iran does not obtain a nuclear weapon.”
