JDCA Condemns Kevin McCarthy’s Bogus Impeachment Inquiry

WASHINGTON – The Jewish Democratic Council of America (JDCA) today condemned House Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s decision to open an impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden. Halie Soifer, JDCA CEO, said:

“In a desperate attempt to maintain the speakership amid threats by his own party, Speaker McCarthy is pandering to the most extreme members of his caucus by beginning an impeachment inquiry, which is an absurd act of political theater and retribution. McCarthy’s apparent refusal to hold a full House vote on the inquiry demonstrates that he knows what he is doing is unpopular with the American people. It’s clear the Speaker doesn’t want to make his members vote on a baseless inquiry that may hurt their chances of reelection.

“Joe Biden is the most impactful and transformative president in recent American history, delivering historic investments for the American people including modernizing our nation’s infrastructure, combating climate change, supporting domestic manufacturing, and addressing racism and antisemitism head-on.

“Rather than focusing on responsible governance and working with Democrats to avoid a government shutdown, the GOP is embarking on a desperate attempt to distract the electorate from their own political failings. This is an empty political gimmick – at the expense of the American people – and Republicans should be ashamed.

“The same extreme elements of the GOP that denied the outcome of the 2020 election outcome are now focused on impeaching the duly elected president. The House should be doing the people’s business, not Donald Trump’s business. These ongoing Republican attacks on our democracy underscore why Jewish American voters will play a vital role in ensuring that President Biden is reelected and that Democrats take back control of the House in 2024.”
