JDCA Weekly Wrap Up – Unprecedented and Deeply Troubling Developments

August 24, 2018

Friends,

This week’s news was filled with unprecedented and deeply troubling developments, such as President Trump being implicated as an “unindicted co-conspirator” in multiple federal crimes. Democratic senators are now calling for delayed consideration of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the U.S. Supreme Court because, if confirmed, he may rule on matters directly related to the president’s legal troubles. Furthermore, Senate Republicans have stonewalled the Judiciary Committee’s ability to obtain the full set of documents related to Judge Kavanaugh’s legal record. As the Senate prepares to deliberate this critically important nomination, join JDCA in urging your Senator to vote NO on Kavanaugh, and urging Senator McConnell to delay the vote.

Trump
In other news, President Trump issued an ominous warning to Israel that it will have to pay a “higher price” in future negotiations with the Palestinians now that the U.S. Embassy has been moved to Jerusalem. JDCA was appalled that President Trump would suggest exacting a price on Israel as a result of his own foreign policy, and condemned the President for threatening Israel. Finally, JDCA Executive Director Halie Soifer published an op-ed in the Jerusalem Post about why a record number of Jewish voters will support Democrats in November. Read on for more…
Delay Consideration of Judge Kavanaugh
JDCA strongly opposes Judge Brett Kavanaugh’s nomination to the U.S. Supreme Court. Through his opinions as a federal appellate court judge and attorney, Judge Kavanaugh has demonstrated a conservative record on issues such as a woman’s right to choose, gun safety reform, access to affordable health care, and environmental and consumer protections. If confirmed, we are deeply concerned that Judge Kavanaugh would shift the ideological balance of the Court away from our values and restrict the rights of current and future generations.

Judge Kavanaugh has also stated his long-held view that sitting presidents should not be investigated or indicted for criminal activity. No one is above the law, including the president, and anyone who breaks the law must be held accountable. This is an increasingly resonant concern after Trump’s former campaign manager Paul Manafort was found guilty this week on eight counts, and former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen pled guilty to multiple crimes in which the president himself was implicated as an “unindicted co-conspirator.”

Democratic senators have called for delaying consideration of Donald Trump’s Supreme Court nominee after the president was implicated in federal crimes. Democrats also continue to demand the full set of documents related to Judge Kavanaugh’s legal record, which Senate Republicans have stonewalled. JDCA agrees that the Senate’s deliberation of Judge Kavanaugh should be put on hold until all of these issues are resolved and faith in our democratic processes is restored. JDCA has also advocated for a delay in the Senate’s consideration of any nominee to the Supreme Court.

Condemning Trump for Threatening Israel
This week, JDCA condemned President Trump’s ominous warning that Israel will “have to pay a higher price” now that the U.S. embassy has been moved to Jerusalem. He also stated that the Palestinians will “get something very good” in future peace negotiations with Israel. By threatening to exact a price on Israel for his own flawed policy-making, President Trump has created confusion and distance with the Israeli government. It’s long past time for Trump’s supporters in the pro-Israel community to stop putting party over policy and speak out against his reckless, and at times incoherent, foreign policy, which has isolated the United States from allies throughout the world.
