Democratic leadership vs. Republican disarray

October 6, 2023

Dear Friends,

The events of this past week demonstrated the extreme contrast between a fully functional Democratic Party delivering for the American people and a Republican Party in complete and utter disarray. The extreme MAGA wing of the GOP ousted Kevin McCarthy as Speaker of the House, the first time a Speaker has been voted out in American history. We don’t yet know who the next Speaker will be, and the possibilities of Congressmen Jim Jordan and Steve Scalise are deeply concerning given their election denialism and extremism. We certainly hope Republicans will get their act together, start to govern, and avert a government shutdown in November.

It’s worth noting that with exactly the same five-seat House majority that Republicans have now, Democrats in the previous Congress passed the American Rescue Plan, the Inflation Reduction Act, aid to Ukraine, reform of the Electoral Count Act, the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, the largest gun safety bill to pass Congress in 30 years, and the Chips and Science Act of 2022. We’re proud of this record of leadership, which is why we believe the next Speaker should be Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, and we’re doing everything we can to ensure that’s the case in 2024.

Also this week, Vice President Harris swore in Senator Laphonza Butler (D-CA), the third Black woman to serve in the U.S. Senate. In addition, President Biden announced lower healthcare costs for millions of seniors and forgave over $9 billion in student loans. JDCA also hosted hosted a fascinating discussion on the state of our democracy called “The Road to 2024,” featuring Secretaries of State Cisco Aguilar (NV), Jocelyn Benson (MI), and Adrian Fontes (AZ) moderated by political commentator Brian Tyler Cohen. The discussion underscored the importance of defending democracy, protecting the right to vote, and JDCA’s efforts to lay the groundwork for the 2024 election. If you missed it, watch the full event here.

Democrats are leading on the issues that matter and the issues most important to American Jews. Together, we can protect our elections, defend democracy, and elect leaders who prioritize governing over disarray and dysfunction. Join JDCA’s efforts to re-elect President Biden and Vice President Harris, expand our Senate majority, and take back control of the House of Representatives. Support JDCA and sign up to join our efforts to ensure Democratic wins on the road to 2024.

Next Wednesday, October 11 at 5:00 p.m. ET, our friends at Jewish Women for Joe are hosting a 2024 campaign kickoff featuring First Lady Jill Biden. If you are interested in registering for this great event, click here.

Thank you for your continued partnership.
