Why was this week different than all other weeks?

April 10, 2023

Last week, we gathered with family and friends at our Seders in honor of Passover. Around the table, we recited the four questions, asking how this night was different from all other nights.

As Passover comes to an end later this week, we have four more questions about how this past week was different from all other weeks. We ask these questions motivated by our renewed commitment to ending oppression, combating right-wing extremism, and seeking justice for all Americans.

  1. Why did Tennessee Republicans expel Reps. Justin Pearson and Justin Jones, two Black Democrats, for protesting gun violence?
  2. Why did a Trump-appointed judge take the unprecedented step of denying access to the “abortion pill”?
  3. Why are Republicans refusing to condemn Supreme Court Justice Thomas’s highly unethical acceptance of multiple donations from a collector of Nazi memorabilia?
  4. Why is the Republican governor of Texas Greg Abbott planning to pardon a right-wing extremist who was found guilty of murdering a Black Lives Matter protestor?

The answer to all of these questions is the same: The Republican Party is the political home for right-wing extremism. While these particular events make this past week unique, they are part and parcel of the GOP’s extremist agenda, which threatens our democracy and community. Elections matter, and we need your help to win them and to ensure we elect Democrats who share our core values.

Wishing you a Chag Pesach Sameach — Happy Passover.

Warmly,
