Tragedy in Texas & Taking Action
Yesterday, at least 19 fourth graders and two adults in a Texas elementary school were horrifically murdered in their classroom. Jewish Dems mourn with the families in Uvalde who have endured this horrific loss of young lives.
Republicans who say that ‘now is not the time for politics’ are wrong. Now is exactly the time for politics. We cannot allow Republicans’ inaction or empty expressions of “thoughts and prayers” distract us, nor can we continue to let the GOP prioritize guns over human life. No one who looks the other way as children are repeatedly terrorized and murdered in school has the right to call themselves “pro-life.”
The GOP’s ongoing refusal to support common-sense gun safety efforts has created an unconscionable culture of gun violence in America. The gun lobby and their Republican enablers are not interested in the value of pikuach nefesh, the sacred value of each human life. If they cared, 19 children and two teachers in Uvalde might still be alive today.
Senator Chris Murphy (D-CT) took to the Senate floor yesterday begging Republicans to take action and protect our children. He asked them simple yet powerful questions: “What are we doing? Why do you spend all this time running for the United States Senate? Why are you here if not to solve a problem as existential as this?” We are choosing to answer these rhetorical questions at the polls, where we will defeat Republicans who refuse to enact gun safety measures in November. Full stop.
American families have endured too much senseless and devastating loss due to gun violence, and it must end. Here are three ways you can take immediate action with Jewish Dems for gun safety:
- Demand your Senators pass the Bipartisan Background Checks Act and eliminate the Charleston Loophole, which Democrats have already passed in the House.
- Today, President Biden’s nominee for Director of the ATF, Steven Dettelbach, appeared before the Judiciary Committee. Join us in demanding the GOP end its obstruction & support Dettelbach.
- The only answer to creating change and passing life-saving gun safety measures is to vote Republicans out of office in November and elect Democrats who understand the importance of gun safety.
