Tragedy in Highland Park – Support the Assault Weapons Ban
This Independence Day was marred by more horrific mass shootings. Our hearts break for the people of Highland Park, Illinois and the other communities nationwide impacted by gun violence over the holiday weekend. JDCA has many volunteers, staff, and board members based in Highland Park, where seven people were murdered and dozens were injured by a shooter with an assault rifle indiscriminately firing into the city’s Fourth of July parade. Today, we are in mourning given our nation’s immeasurable loss to gun violence.
This mass shooting, and countless others, could have been thwarted were it not for the GOP’s continued opposition to legislation needed to address gun violence. As JDCA Chief of Staff and Highland Park resident Steve Sheffey said, “We have a Congress where Republicans block gun safety legislation and a Supreme Court that rules gun safety legislation unconstitutional if it does pass. No other country has mass shootings like ours. No other country comes close.” Republicans are the reason Congress has not taken action to prevent gun violence tragedies such as the ones that occurred on the Fourth of July.
The evidence is clear: Congress must reinstate the assault weapons ban and get these incredibly dangerous weapons off the streets. Demand that your members of Congress reinstate the assault weapons ban, which was one of the most effective policies in the fight against gun violence. Join us by clicking on the button below and sharing it with others. Enough is enough. Congress must take action.
America’s future as a safe and secure democracy is on the ballot this November and democracy loses if the GOP wins. The stakes – including gun violence, voting rights, and reproductive rights – are too high for anyone to sit on the sidelines.
Thank you for continuing to support JDCA and our shared values. We’re working each day between now and November 8 to elect Democrats in the midterms to keep our country and communities safe, and we hope you’ll join us.
Sincerely,
Halie Soifer,
CEO, Jewish Democratic Council of America
