TAKE ACTION: Tell Speaker Johnson to do his job and swear in Rep.-elect Grijalva
On September 23, Adelita Grijalva was elected to represent the people of Arizona’s 7th Congressional District. Rep.-elect Grijalva overwhelmingly won her election, but for nearly one month since, the people of AZ-07 have been denied representation because Speaker Mike Johnson refuses to administer the oath of office and swear her into Congress.
For weeks, Speaker Johnson has made various excuses for his unconstitutional delay. He cited the government shutdown, perhaps without considering that he swore in two Republican members of Congress from Florida earlier this year – less than 24 hours after their election – when the House was in the same pro-forma session that it is today.
He then cited the lack of certification in the election – something that never appears to have previously mattered – without recognizing that the election was certified by the Attorney General of Arizona, who is now threatening legal action against the Speaker for the delay.
In a letter to the Speaker, the Arizona Attorney General cites the Constitution, which makes clear that the Speaker of the House has no authority to refuse to swear in Rep.-elect Grijalva. Speaker Johnson’s actions are unconstitutional, and it’s time to make our voices heard.
TELL SPEAKER JOHNSON: DO YOUR JOB AND SWEAR IN REP.-ELECT GRIJALVA
So what’s the real reason Speaker Johnson won’t swear in Rep.-elect Grijalva? It’s likely because she would provide the final signature on a discharge petition to force the release of the Epstein files. Republicans are desperate to avoid a vote on this issue since they would rather protect President Trump than listen to the American people, who want transparency.
Write to Congress today to demand that Speaker Johnson swear in Adelita Grijalva.
