Jewish Dems Support Equality in the U.S. and Israel

The Jewish Democratic Council of America (JDCA) echoes the concern of the American Jewish community and Israelis about the passage of the nation-state bill and other efforts to limit equality in Israel, including for non-Jews and members of the LGBTQ community. As Jewish Democrats, we support equal rights for all within a nation’s borders, whether here in the United States or in Israel.

The nation-state law is an abrogation of Israel’s founding principles of democracy, equality and pluralism. As the New York Times cover story states, “Now, a half century and one year later [after its founding], Israel has formally declared the right of national self-determination, once envisioned to include all within its borders, as ‘unique to the Jewish people.'”

While we strongly support Israel’s character as a Jewish state, this must not come at the expense of Israel’s democratic institutions and values.
