Jewish Dems Statement on Juneteenth
Halie Soifer, Executive Director of the Jewish Democratic Council of America, released the following statement on Juneteenth, expressing solidarity with and among the Black community, including Black Jewish leaders, in their ongoing struggle for justice.
WASHINGTON – “Juneteenth is a celebration of liberation, freedom and emancipation, but this year is also a time for reflection. With so many Americans waking up to the realities of systemic racism in our country, we reaffirm our strong and unwavering commitment to racial justice in America.
“As Jews, we know that our liberation is bound with that of our neighbors, and we stand in solidarity with and among the Black community, including Black Jewish leaders, in their ongoing struggle for justice.
“The legacy of slavery lives on with racial inequities in housing, employment, voting rights, law enforcement, education, economic opportunity, health care and reproductive health, and persistent white supremacy. These manifestations of systemic racism must end, and until they do, we will continue to join with the Black community and lift our voices in support of equality and justice for all Americans.”
