Jewish Dems Stand With Dr. Ford, Question Kavanaugh’s Temperament and Character
WASHINGTON, DC – Today, the Senate Judiciary Committee heard testimony from Dr. Christine Blasey Ford and Judge Brett Kavanaugh, President Trump’s Supreme Court nominee, about Ford’s accusation that Judge Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her in 1982. In response, Halie Soifer, Executive Director of the Jewish Democratic Council of America (JDCA), issued the following statement:
“The Jewish Democratic Council of America (JDCA) commends Dr. Ford’s remarkable bravery and courage, despite the significant personal sacrifice and heavy emotional toll incurred by speaking truth to power. JDCA unequivocally supports Dr. Ford — who was clearly driven by a sense of civic duty — and is outraged that Republicans on the Senate Judiciary Committee would politicize, discredit, and dismiss her claims of sexual assault. JDCA seeks to uphold and promote Jewish, Democratic, and American values such as due process under the law. In this context, we are outraged that Republicans are rushing to vote on Judge Kavanaugh’s confirmation in the absence of a FBI investigation and without calling forward additional witnesses.
“Today’s hearing demonstrated that Judge Kavanaugh does not have the temperament or character to sit on our nation’s highest court. Out of respect for Dr. Ford, our democracy, and the fundamental rights of future generations, we encourage all Americans to join Jewish Dems in calling on the Senate to delay a confirmation vote, and ultimately, oppose Judge Kavanaugh’s nomination. We must ensure that the Court remains true to the motto engraved above its entrance: ‘equal justice under law’ and Judge Kavanaugh cannot be trusted to do so. This is not a partisan issue and the stakes could not be higher.”
