Jewish Dems Slam House GOP Ploy on Israel
WASHINGTON – In response to House Speaker Mike Johnson’s announcement that he is introducing a stand-alone bill containing aid to Israel – rejecting a bipartisan agreement brokered in the Senate including President Biden’s request for emergency aid to Israel, Ukraine, and other allies, plus funds for border security and humanitarian assistance to the Palestinians – Jewish Democratic Council of America CEO Halie Soifer said the following:
“This is the second time Speaker Johnson has chosen to play politics with Israel’s security, jeopardizing the passage of aid to Israel and other national security imperatives.
“After more than three months of obstruction, which included an unprecedented Republican proposal to condition aid to Israel on needless cuts to the IRS, the GOP is proposing an aid package focused solely on Israel. This is a cynical ploy by Republican leadership to undermine broader national security interests, cut off vital aid to Ukraine, and prevent humanitarian aid from reaching those in need. It will also effectively cause further delay to essential military aid for Israel because Speaker Johnson knows his bill is dead on arrival in the Senate.
“While JDCA strongly supports aid to Israel – with no cuts or conditions – this is a bad-faith effort by Republicans to use support for Israel to derail security assistance for Ukraine and border security. JDCA encourages swift passage of the bipartisan bill negotiated in the Senate which fully funds the President’s unprecedented request for Israel, funds aid to Ukraine, and advances U.S. national security interests in the Middle East and beyond.”
