Jewish Dems Respond to the Confirmation of Amy Coney Barrett:
WASHINGTON – The Jewish Democratic Council of America (JDCA) responded to the Senate’s confirmation of Amy Coney Barrett as the next associate justice of the US Supreme Court.
JDCA Executive Director Halie Soifer released the following statement:
“Jewish Dems see the confirmation of Amy Coney Barrett for what it is – a partisan power grab by President Trump and Senate Republicans, which violates the will of the American people, Justice Ginsburg’s dying wish, and the standard Republicans set themselves for Supreme Court nominations in a presidential election year. This confirmation will impact generations of Americans, and it’s a shande – a shame to our democracy and judiciary.
“Judge Barrett has demonstrated a total disregard for legal precedent on critical issues such as the Affordable Care Act, equality in marriage, and reproductive freedom, and her views on the law are far outside the mainstream of public opinion. She has also refused to commit to recusing herself from cases involving an election dispute, and may serve as the swing vote on the Court deciding the outcome of our presidential election.
“As the 2020 election draws to a close and amid a pandemic that has caused more than 220,000 deaths in our country, Republicans have shown they care more about their political power than helping the countless Americans whose lives will be irrevocably altered by this moment in history.
“That’s why a majority of Jewish Americans will overwhelmingly support Joe Biden and the many qualified Democrats challenging Republican Senate incumbents. We will not accept four more years of Donald Trump or Mitch McConnell’s chokehold on our democracy.”
