Jewish Dems Respond to Regime Change in Venezuela
“The American people do not want – nor did they vote for – an unauthorized war with Venezuela.”
WASHINGTON — After the Trump administration initiated military strikes that led to the arrest of Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro and announcement that the United States will “run Venezuela” for the foreseeable future, Halie Soifer, CEO of the Jewish Democratic Council of America (JDCA), released the following statement:
“Nicolás Maduro is an authoritarian dictator who has clung to power despite losing an election in 2024, and it’s past time for his oppressive rule to come to an end. We commend the professionalism of the U.S. military operation conducted in Venezuela earlier today, but have serious doubts about the legality of President Trump’s actions and his declaration to ‘run Venezuela,’ which may require an extended U.S. military presence in South America.
“The unauthorized use of the U.S. military by President Trump to create regime change in Venezuela is an affront to our democracy and establishes a dangerous American and global precedent. President Trump does not appear to have a strategy to prevent Venezuela from descending into chaos, and we are deeply concerned about the message Trump’s actions send to our adversaries, including Russia and China.
“For the overwhelming majority of Jewish American voters, maintaining our democracy is the number one policy priority. The American people do not want – nor did they vote for – an unauthorized war with Venezuela, especially not one that circumvents the U.S. Constitution.
“President Trump must coordinate all next steps in Venezuela, including the use of the U.S. military, with Congress.”
