Jewish Dems Respond to House GOP Impeachment of Sec. Mayorkas
WASHINGTON – In response to the House GOP vote this evening to impeach U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, Jewish Democratic Council of America CEO Halie Soifer released the following statement:
“Instead of voting to pass critical security assistance for Israel and Ukraine, House Republicans defied the Constitution to impeach Secretary Mayorkas. In recent weeks, the GOP refused to fund border security and instead used it as a false pretext for this baseless impeachment vote. Republicans have been gaslighting the American people with this political theater, following the cynical political directive of Donald Trump.
“Republicans’ targeting of Mayorkas – one of the highest-ranking Jewish Americans in the Biden Administration – has been replete with antisemitic conspiracy theories and included an antisemitic slur invoked by Rep. Mark Green (R-TN), who called Mayorkas a ‘reptile.’ Shame on the GOP for repeating the same hateful conspiracy theories echoed by neo-Nazis in Charlottesville.
“Sec. Mayorkas committed no high crimes and misdemeanors – the requirement for impeachment – and we are appalled by this extremism meant to distract from the real threats and issues facing the American people. Jewish Dems will do all we can to hold Republicans – including Donald Trump – accountable for their abuse of power and threats to our democracy in November.”
