Jewish Dems Mourn the Loss of Michael Bauer

WASHINGTON — The Jewish Democratic Council of America (JDCA) today issued a statement mourning the loss of Chicago Jewish community leader and activist Michael Bauer, z”l.

“It is with a heavy heart that we mourn the loss of Michael Bauer, z’l, an exceptional leader not only in Chicago’s Jewish community, but in the LGBTQ community and in the civic life of the city. Michael touched the lives of so many in Chicago and beyond, and was an inspiration to Jewish and human rights leaders throughout the country.

“Michael’s life was dedicated to furthering his values, including equality for the LGBTQ community, combatting hatred, anti-Semitism and other forms of discrimination, and supporting Democratic and pro-Israel causes. Inspired by his remarkable 103-year-old mother, who survived the Holocaust, Michael served as Co-Chairman of the State of Illinois Holocaust and Genocide Commission. More recently, Michael recently served as Chairman of Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot’s mayoral campaign. Michael’s professional and personal accomplishments are too vast to list, and we are incredibly saddened his life was cut short.

“Michael Bauer was a good friend to JDCA, and his memory will inspire us to give voice to our values, including tikkun olam. JDCA Vice Chair Barbara Goldberg Goldman, who knew Michael well, remembers him as ‘a hidden righteous one.’ He will be deeply missed, and our deepest condolences go out to his husband Roger, his mother, his family and friends, and all who loved him. May Michael’s memory be for a blessing.”
