Jewish Dems Congratulate George Latimer on His Overwhelming Victory in NY-16
WASHINGTON — Following George Latimer’s victory in the Democratic primary in New York’s 16th Congressional District, Halie Soifer, CEO of the Jewish Democratic Council of America (JDCA), released the following statement:
“JDCA congratulates George Latimer on his overwhelming victory in the NY-16 Democratic primary. We were proud to endorse him earlier this year and to mobilize volunteers across the country to make nearly 25,000 direct Jewish voter contacts in this race.
“Tonight’s result demonstrates the critical role that Jewish voters have – and will continue to have – on the outcome of elections. It also demonstrates that Jamaal Bowman was out of step with the Democratic Party, his constituents, and Jewish voters, and he lost his seat in Congress as a result.
With the Jewish vote constituting 13 percent of the electorate in NY-16, Jewish voters overwhelmingly supported George Latimer and helped to unseat Jamaal Bowman. Jewish voters had a similarly large electoral impact earlier this year in NY-3, which is an 11 percent Jewish district that flipped from red to blue, electing Rep. Tom Suozzi.
Rising antisemitism, the horrific attacks perpetrated by Hamas, and Republican threats to our democracy and reproductive rights make electing candidates who share our Jewish values more important than ever before. George Latimer not only shares the values of Jewish American voters, but he also brings decades of experience to NY-16. We look forward to working with him in Congress to advance our shared values and interests.”
