Jewish Democratic Council of America (JDCA) Urges Gov. Eric Greitens (R-MO) to Resign
The Missouri Republican has brought enough shame on his state, and should step down following his criminal indictment.
For the past month, Missouri residents have been spectators to a sad and sordid drama after reports that the state’s Republican governor, Eric Greitens, had threatened to release “revenge porn” against a woman with whom he had had an extra-marital affair. On Thursday, Greitens was booked and taken into custody after a St. Louis grand jury charged him with invasion of privacy following these revelations. We call on Greitens to immediately resign, as he should have when these accusations, supported by audio recordings and other electronic evidence, first surfaced. We as an organization, and as an American Jewish community, deplore all forms of sexual assault, harassment and intimidation. We do not see how Greitens can continue in office after this indictment. No one should take relish in this turn of events. We extend our best wishes to his wife and family, who have endured the harsh glare of the public spotlight throughout this scandal. We as a Jewish community have also been embarrassed by this unseemly, sexist and immoral behavior from one of the country’s leading Jewish politicians. Missourians deserve a governor who will model standards of decency, respect and probity, and we sincerely hope the state’s next leader will embody these values.
