JDCA Statement on Situation in Gaza

May 30, 2025

The Jewish Democratic Council of America (JDCA) affirms the urgent need for increased and sustained humanitarian assistance to the people of Gaza, who are suffering from a devastating humanitarian crisis. As Jewish Democrats, we are guided by our Jewish values. Israel has a right to protect its security interests, and we continue to unequivocally condemn Hamas for the brutal attacks on October 7 and call on Hamas to immediately release all 58 remaining hostages, living and deceased. Hamas bears responsibility for the war it initiated on October 7, 2023, with its unprovoked terrorist attack on Israel, as well as for the immense harm they are responsible for in Gaza. It is clear there can be no lasting peace so long as Hamas is still in power in Gaza.

At the same time, we call on Israel to ensure the continued flow of vital humanitarian and food aid into Gaza.

Our responsibility to speak out in this moment is deeply rooted in the Jewish tradition of upholding justice and dignity for all people. Food, clean water, medical supplies, and other forms of life-saving assistance must be able to enter Gaza, and we encourage Israel, the U.S. government, and others in the region to do everything in their power to facilitate the flow of vital humanitarian aid. We strongly support robust safeguards to prevent aid from being diverted by Hamas, as we know Hamas has stolen food assistance and diverted it from reaching innocent non-combatants. Despite the nefarious obstacles created by Hamas, we strongly encourage the continued flow of humanitarian aid. We believe it is morally necessary to both support Israel’s security and right to self-defense, while at the same time, helping to alleviate suffering in Gaza.

The humanitarian crisis in Gaza must be brought to an end. We call on Israel to allow aid to flow in levels needed to address the human suffering of innocent civilians. Additionally, we call for continued U.S. leadership in seeking a ceasefire that ensures a release of all the hostages, as well as a long-term political solution that ensures peace, dignity, and security for both Israelis and Palestinians.
