Haaretz: Knesset may dissolve as early as Tuesday, leading to snap elections

March 13, 2018

Contrary to what Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in his speech to the Knesset Monday evening – that he’s making a last-ditch effort to avoid an early election – he did not hold a meeting that night with Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman or any of his other coalition partners.

As of Tuesday morning, Israeli politicians continued their efforts to bring about an early election and to dissolve the Knesset as early as Tuesday evening.

Ultra-Orthodox parties and Lieberman’s Yisrael Beiteinu have threatened to disband the coalition if their demands regarding the bill exempting ultra-Orthodox yeshiva students from military service are not met, which would prompt the snap election. Israelis are currently scheduled to go to the polls only in November 2019.
