✅ Another Win: Student Loan Relief
President Biden understands the toll that out of control student debt takes on American families and has already taken substantial action by repeatedly extending the pause in student loan payments and canceling debts for victims of illegal and fraudulent loans and colleges. The President’s decision today to forgive up to $20,000 of student debt if you went to college on Pell Grants, and $10,000 if you didn’t, for those making less than $125,000 and to extend the pause on student loan repayment through December 31 marks the most substantive action taken by any president to address the student loan crisis. Jewish Dems support this relief and urge you to join us in calling on Congress to take further action and ensure future generations can attend college without going into lifelong debt.
The student debt crisis in America has grown to $1.75 trillion. Insurmountable student debt has created economic hardship for millions of Americans and uniquely impacts the Jewish community. While about 38% of the general U.S. population has completed a bachelor’s degree, a graduate degree, or an advanced degree, 67% of Jewish voters have completed those degrees, according to the Jewish Electorate Institute’s most recent survey. Americans spend decades paying off loans that make it difficult and in some cases impossible to save for their future, extending cycles of poverty and perpetuating systemic inequity. This relief by President Biden is an important step, and we know more must be done to pull millions of Americans out of debt.
President Biden has done more than any other president in U.S. history to address the student loan crisis, keeping his promise to the American people. This latest victory for Americans follows President Biden signing executive orders to protect abortion rights and signing the Inflation Reduction Act and the PACT Act (addressing veterans’ exposure to toxic substances) into law, House Democrats reauthorizing the assault weapons ban, and President Biden ordering a military strike killing the leader of Al-Qaeda and successor of Osama bin Laden.
Despite the slimmest congressional majority in modern American history, Democrats in Congress, led by President Biden, are delivering for the American people at home and abroad.
