A Week of Dem Leadership & GOP Hypocrisy
This was a week characterized by Democratic leadership and Republican hypocrisy. We are proud to support an important resolution introduced by Reps. Gottheimer, Omar and many other Democrats rejecting hate, discrimination, and antisemitism in all forms, including antisemitism masquerading as anti-Israel sentiment. Join us in urging your members of Congress to reject antisemitism and sponsor H.Res.92.
Also this week, House Republicans once again proved they have no respect for good governance or democratic norms. We continue to urge Rep. George Santos (R-NY) — who was elected on false pretenses, including fake claims of being the Jewish descendent of Holocaust survivors — to resign. We condemned Republicans for their political games, which this week included an unjust act of political retribution, stripping now three Democrats of important committee assignments. KEVIN MCCARTHY’S ATTACK ON REPS. SCHIFF, SWALWELL & OMAR
Yesterday, House Republicans voted to remove Rep. Ilhan Omar from the House Committee on Foreign Affairs. Republicans also recently removed Reps. Adam Schiff and Eric Swalwell from the Select Committee on Intelligence on baseless grounds, while restoring committee assignments for extremist Republicans Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene and Paul Gosar.
Jewish Dems condemn violence, antisemitism, and extremism wherever they exist. But there is no equivalence between the two parties on this issue – Democrats have sought to combat extremism, while the GOP has normalized bigotry and provided a political home for extremists. The three Democrats removed from committees have never advocated for attacking our democracy or murdering their colleagues, unlike some Republicans currently serving on House committees.
Yesterday’s vote once again proves that Republicans have no respect for democracy. As we have said before, Jewish Dems oppose the GOP removal of these three Democrats from their committee assignments. We’ve disagreed with Rep. Omar on Israel, condemned her use of antisemitic tropes, and welcomed her apology. We stand with all House Democrats who voted unanimously to oppose this unjust act of political retribution. THE NEVER-ENDING SAGA OF GEORGE SANTOS
Also this week, Siena College released a poll showing that 94% of Jewish Americans in Rep. George Santos’ district want the lying Republican to resign. George Santos stepped down from his committee assignments this week, but that is not enough; he must resign from Congress. Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy insists it is up to the voters — well, 94% of Jews and 78% of voters in George Santos’ district want him to step down. His constituents have reached their breaking point and it is past time for him to resign. Join us and urge your member of Congress to call for George Santos to resign from office.
