NEW OP-ED: Republican Delay of Lipstadt Hurts the Security of Jews
Yesterday, nearly 200 days after her nomination was announced, Dr. Deborah Lipstadt finally had her Senate confirmation hearing to serve as Special Envoy to Monitor and Combat Antisemitism. ICYMI, you can watch the hearing here.
The hearing was a good start, but it’s not enough. It’s past time for the Senate to move quickly and confirm Dr. Lipstadt. As Deputy Envoy Aaron Keyak stated, “Every day that passes without that leadership in our office, our compelling — even lifesaving — work is hampered.” The Republican delay of Lipstadt’s nomination has endangered the security of Jews.
Read more and share my new op-ed in The Forward about the impact of Republican hypocrisy on antisemitism and extremism, and why Republicans must stop obstructing Lipstadt’s confirmation. Also, tell your Senators to immediately confirm Dr. Deborah Lipstadt and share.
TELL SENATE TO CONFIRM LIPSTADT
In the hearing, Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) had the audacity to question Dr. Lipstadt’s qualifications for this role. Sen. Johnson is entitled to his own opinions but not his own facts. As one of the world’s leading scholars on antisemitism, the Holocaust, and Holocaust denial, Dr. Lipstadt is eminently qualified for this role and should be confirmed as soon as possible.
As I wrote in The Forward, “Republicans cannot have it both ways. They cannot feign concern about antisemitism while tolerating and aligning with extremists and ignoring Trump’s ongoing role in inciting it. They also cannot continue to delay confirmation of the person nominated to serve as the U.S. government envoy to combat it. Today’s a good start, but it’s not enough — it’s past time for the Senate to vote and confirm Deborah Lipstadt.”
TELL SENATE TO CONFIRM LIPSTADT
We will continue to call out Republican hypocrisy and obstruction, especially when it harms our security and community. We appreciate your continued support of JDCA’s efforts to advance our Jewish and Democratic values.
Sincerely,
Halie Soifer,
CEO, Jewish Democratic Council of America
