Jewish Dems Respond to the Passage of Trump’s Big, Ugly Bill

July 3, 2025

WASHINGTON – After the House of Representatives voted to pass the Senate version of the reconciliation budget bill, Halie Soifer, CEO of the Jewish Democratic Council of America (JDCA), released the following statement:

“We wish we were surprised to see this incredibly dangerous bill pass the House, but unfortunately it’s consistent with the devastation, destruction, and betrayal that has defined Trump’s second term.

“In a recent poll of Jewish Americans, 88% opposed cuts to Medicaid. Opposition to this bill among Jewish voters transcends politics because depriving tens of millions of Americans access to healthcare and food assistance is a direct affront to our core values. It’s also an egregious betrayal of the obligation elected officials have to serve the best interests of the American people.

“This bill will take money away from working and middle class Americans, transferring wealth to billionaires, while the majority of Americans suffer. The cuts to renewable energy tax credits will add billions of dollars to the deficit while raising energy and transportation costs and diminishing clean energy jobs. Devastating cuts to SNAP benefits will make it harder – if not impossible – for many Americans to afford food. Medical costs will be more expensive for all Americans, nursing homes and hospitals will shut down, and tens of millions of children will no longer have access to healthcare.

“Nearly all Americans will feel the devastating impact of this legislation, while the wealthiest billionaires enjoy their tax kickbacks, which will increase our debt by $4 trillion. This comes at a time when our federal debt is already dangerously high, and it will increase interest rates and prices. One day before we celebrate our country’s freedom from tyranny, the Republican Party has fully acquiesced to Donald Trump’s authoritarian agenda at the expense of our fundamental American values. It’s shameful, and we plan to hold every Republican who supported this bill accountable in the midterms.”
