Jewish Dems Heartbroken and Enraged Over Elementary School Shooting in Uvalde, Texas

May 24, 2022

After today’s tragic shooting in Uvalde, Texas, in which at least 14 elementary school students and a teacher were viciously murdered, Jewish Democratic Council of America CEO Halie Soifer released the following statement, mourning the loss of innocent lives and deploring the obstruction of the gun lobby and Republicans to gun safety measures:

“Earlier today, elementary school students in Texas were the victims of our country’s deplorable culture of gun violence. We mourn with the families in Uvalde who have endured this horrific loss of young lives.

Republicans’ ongoing refusal to support common sense efforts and collective inaction has created an unconscionable culture of gun violence. The gun lobby and their Republican enablers are an affront to all we stand for as Jewish Americans, including pikuach nefesh – the sacred value of each human life.

Today, at least 15 families lost their children. Tomorrow, there will be more. American families have endured too much senseless and devastating loss due to gun violence, and it must come to an end.

We continue to implore elected officials to take meaningful action to prevent gun violence. Yet we know Republicans have shamefully and repeatedly refused to take action to save lives. We therefore also commit to doing everything we can to vote Republicans out of office in November, and elect Democrats who share our values, including the importance of gun safety.”
