July 13, 2018

Friends,

Here at JDCA, we’re making waves this summer, with the aim of ushering in a “blue wave” in the fall. This week, we endorsed five more candidates in the midterm elections and launched an interactive campaign opposing Judge Brett Kavanaugh’s appointment to the Supreme Court. Today, we encourage you to join our efforts, and ensure your voice is heard on Capitol Hill. Click here to write your senators, urging them to oppose Kavanaugh’s nomination. We must protect our rights and those of future generations, and ensure that the Court remains true to the motto engraved above its entrance: “equal justice under law.” Read on to learn more about JDCA’s activities on these issues and more…

Write to Your Senators Urging a “No” Vote on Kavanaugh
JDCA is deeply concerned that, if confirmed by the Senate, Judge Kavanaugh will shift the ideological balance of the Supreme Court as the swing vote on decisions that will turn back the clock on decades of social progress. Such decisions would directly threaten the values that we hold dear as Jews and Democrats, such as a woman’s right to choose, voting rights, separation of church and state, social and economic justice, and environmental protection. The stakes could not be higher.

As individual senators consider how they will vote on the confirmation of Judge Kavanaugh, join JDCA in writing to your senators urging them to oppose his nomination. Simply click on this link, and include your address, to send a letter to your senators. Please help us get the word out by sharing this post with family and friends.

JDCA Makes Third Round of Endorsements
On Thursday, JDCA announced its support for five additional candidates in the midterm elections: Sen. Bob Menendez of New Jersey in his reelection campaign, as well as House candidates Mike Levin in California District 49, Kathy Manning in North Carolina District 13, Elissa Slotkin in Michigan District 8, and Susan Wild in Pennsylvania District 7. All are strong candidates who share our values and policy positions, and will bring a wealth of experience to Congress. JDCA has previously endorsed the following 10 candidates: Sens. Sherrod Brown (OH), Claire McCaskill (MO), Bill Nelson (FL) for reelection; Rep. Jacky Rosen in her bid against Sen. Dean Heller; incumbents Rep. Josh Gottheimer (NJ) and Rep. Conor Lamb (PA) in their reelection campaigns; and House candidates Sean Casten (IL), Tom Malinowski (NJ), Dean Phillips (MN) and Mikie Sherrill (NJ). Please check out full profiles of all JDCA endorsed-candidates.

JDCA will announce additional endorsements in the weeks and months ahead, so stay tuned. Please also consider offering your support to JDCA to ensure our endorsements are even more meaningful and help us turn red seats to blue.

Sen. Merkley Speaks to JDCA on Supreme Court, Family Separations
Jewish Democrats welcomed Sen. Jeff Merkley (OH) in our speaker series this week. Sen. Merkley, who was one of the first U.S. government officials to attempt to visit a detention center on the border, detailed his visits twith families that had been torm apart. He also urged JDCA supporters and all Americans to write their senators ahead of a confirmation vote on Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, stressing the importance of outreach in bringing pressure on swing votes in the Senate. In addition to Merkley, JDCA members also heard from Dr. Phil Wolgin, an immigration expert at the Center for American Progress, who outlined actions Congress could take to address the family separation crisis.
