JDCA statement on anti-choice legislation in the United States Senate

January 29, 2018

Diane S. Feinberg, executive committee member of the Jewish Democratic Council of America (JDCA), issued the following statement on behalf of the organization following the consideration of anti-choice legislation in the United States Senate:

“We oppose Senate Republicans’ effort to restrict a woman’s right to choose. Republicans are expected to soon force an initial vote on legislation that would sharply curtail abortion rights at 20 weeks. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has championed this bill, basing his arguments on bogus and offensive claims about ‘fetal pain.’

This legislation is almost certain to fail, given the Republicans’ narrow hold on the Senate. Republicans know this, but want to pander to their far-right base with an attack on women’s health and constitutional rights.

Meanwhile, they are neglecting urgent priorities for the Congress, including protecting Dreamers and passing a federal budget. We urge Senate Republicans to abandon their futile anti-choice bill, and join Democrats in finishing this critical work.”
